Using the New York Post-it® Color Collection as inspiration, origami artist Jenny W. Chan translated the sights and sounds of New York City into a miniature paper-folded world. She's created one original origami design for each color in the collection, including a taxi, street lamp, one-way street sign, and food stand umbrella.
For this design, you’ll use half of a Post-it® Super Sticky Note to create the front half of the subway train, and then you’ll use the other half to make the back. Start by watching the video or following the written instructions below.
1 – 3" x 3" Post-it® Super Sticky Note
1 pair of scissors
1 marker or writing utensil
Fold the Post-it® Super Sticky Note in half horizontally, with the adhesive side facing out. After you fold it, you should have adhesive on both sides. Then unfold it and cut it in half along the crease you just created.
Take one of the Post-it® Super Sticky Note halves and hold it so that the adhesive is on the left and facing you. Lift the adhesive part toward you and fold it over, making a crease at the edge of the adhesive. Then on the right side, do the same thing. Fold the right side over about the same amount as you did on the left.
Then fold the entire unit in half horizontally, with the flaps you just created remaining vertical and on the outside.
Now hold the unit so you can see two layers, a top and bottom. Fold the edge of the top layer up about a half centimeter (it does not have to be an exact measurement). Then flip the unit around and repeat the same thing on the other side; fold the edge of the sheet up about a half centimeter. This creates a small flap on the bottom edge of each side of the unit.
Unfold one of the flaps and flatten the left corner of it so it forms a triangle shape. Then flatten the right corner of this flap, forming a triangle shape on the right.
Flip the train around and repeat the same thing on the other side, creating a triangle shape on the right and left.
Now unfold the horizontal crease you made to the unit in step 3. Hold the unit so three horizontal creases are now facing you. Fold the top edge of the unit towards you and down, folding along the horizontal crease closest to the top. This action will fold the little triangles you just made in half.
Then repeat the same thing at the bottom; fold the bottom edge forward and up, folding along the horizontal crease closest to the bottom.
Turn the unit over and you'll notice there are four small flaps, one on each corner of the unit. Unfold each of these small flaps.
Fold the train in half along the same horizontal crease you created in step 3. The bottom and top edges you folded in step 8 should be facing in.
old the square corner of each of the four train wheels in a little, so the wheels look curved.
To make the front of the train, create a little nook in the upper left hand corner of the train by folding the corner down a little. Unfold. Then turn the train to the side, and push the corner in, along the crease you just made, and then flatten. The front car is done!
For the second half of the Post-it® Super Sticky Note, repeat all of the steps above. Then instead of creating a nook on the left side, create it on the right. Then you're ready to decorate!
