Making a Fashion Statement

What’s the color that makes people appear more “attractive”? Across all cultures, it’s agreed — red.

  • Bright colors get noticed, while neutral hues blend into the background. You’ll want to use both in your wardrobe for maximum versatility.

Research has shown that people associated black clothing with dominance.

If you want to command a room with your status, try wearing black. Or, if you’re trying to capture focus based on the merit of your ideas and personality, turn to vibrant colors. Yellow attire projects optimism and friendliness, orange accessories let everybody know you’re feeling energized and playful, and red clothes demand attention and read as confident.

Activity

  • Take your most flamboyant, brightly-colored shirt or blouse off the hanger and put it on. Now, layer on a sweater or sweatshirt in subdued black or grey. Go into work or school and let your neutral persona take the morning shift. After lunch, take off the top layer to reveal your inner peacock. Do people reach out to you more when your clothing is brighter? Does the increase in connection make you feel happier?
