Discuss basic rules for identifying what elements make up natural or man-made things in the students' environment. For example:

    • - Living or once-living things contain C, H & O
    • - Rock-like things like dirt, glass, sand, concrete and rocks contain Si & O
    • - Things made of steel contain Fe & C
    • - Plastics contain C & H
    • - Air contains N, O & Ar
    • - Most coins contain Cu, Ni & Zn; old coins: Ag
    • - Salt contains Na & Cl

After identifying the rules, assign a specific color of Post-it® Super Sticky Note for each individual element (Orange represents C. Blue represents O. Green represents H, etc.) Then, have your students write each element on the respective colored Post-it® Super Sticky Note.

Next, have your students affix the Post-it® Super Sticky Note containing the appropriate rule on different objects around the school or in the classroom. For instance, the water in a fish tank would be marked with a two H’s and an O. This will help them recognize the simple patterns of which basic elements are contained in all the everyday objects around them.
